Maria Saal Cathedral, also known as the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, dominates the landscape from its hilltop position just north of Klagenfurt. This Gothic structure, built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, is a major pilgrimage destination in Carinthia. Visitors approach via a steep path or road, passing through a fortified gate into a peaceful courtyard. Inside, the high altar and side chapels feature intricate carvings and frescoes, while the exterior's twin spires are visible for miles. The church's elevated location offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Wörthersee lake, making it a rewarding stop for both spiritual and scenic reasons. The interior is relatively simple compared to grand cathedrals, but the atmosphere is serene and the historical significance palpable.

Don't miss

  • Panoramic views of the Klagenfurt basin and Alps from the church hill
  • Gothic high altar with detailed carvings
  • Fortified churchyard with defensive walls and gates
  • Frescoes and side chapels inside the church
