The Duke's Chair (Herzogstuhl) is a historic stone monument located on the Zollfeld plain near Maria Saal, just north of Klagenfurt. This simple but iconic seat consists of a large stone slab with a backrest, placed on a base of smaller stones. It was used from the Middle Ages until the 17th century for the installation ceremony of the Dukes of Carinthia. The duke would sit on the chair, receive the oath of allegiance from the estates, and take possession of the duchy. The site is open-air and free to visit, set in a grassy field with distant mountain views. A nearby informational panel explains the history. While the chair itself is unadorned, its historical significance and symbolic value make it a poignant stop for history enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape is peaceful, with the silhouette of Maria Saal Cathedral visible on the hill.
