The Hungerburgbahn is a modern funicular that carries passengers from the center of Innsbruck up to the Hungerburg district, a residential area on a plateau above the city. The ride is a scenic experience in itself: the glass-roofed cars offer sweeping views of the Inn Valley, the old town, and the surrounding Alps as they climb a steep gradient. The lower station, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, features flowing, organic forms that contrast with the historic city. The upper station at Hungerburg provides access to hiking trails, the Alpenzoo, and the Nordkette cable car system. The journey takes about 8 minutes and is a popular way to escape the city bustle and enjoy nature. At night, the illuminated track creates a dramatic sight.
