Alpenzoo is Europe’s highest-altitude zoo, perched on the slopes of the Nordkette mountain range above Innsbruck. It specializes in the fauna of the Alps, housing over 2,000 animals representing 150 species. Visitors can observe native creatures such as brown bears, ibex, golden eagles, and bearded vultures in naturalistic enclosures that blend into the alpine landscape. The zoo’s elevated location offers panoramic views of Innsbruck and the surrounding peaks, making the visit as much about the scenery as the animals. Walking paths wind through different habitat zones, from forest to rocky terrain, and informative signs explain the ecology and conservation efforts. A highlight is the underwater viewing area for otters and fish. The zoo is family-friendly and provides a unique opportunity to see Alpine wildlife up close without leaving the city.
