Perched on the Hungerburg plateau overlooking Innsbruck, Alpenzoo is Europe’s highest-altitude zoo (750 m) and a sanctuary for Alpine wildlife. The zoo’s terraced layout follows the steep hillside, with paths winding past enclosures that mimic native habitats, rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and forest clearings. Visitors can observe brown bears, wolves, ibex, bearded vultures, and the rare Alpine marmot. The aquarium section features native fish species. The experience is immersive: you’ll hear the echo of chamois calls and see golden eagles soaring against a backdrop of the Nordkette mountains. The zoo’s conservation work includes breeding programs for endangered species like the Alpine salamander. A highlight is the daily feeding sessions, where keepers explain animal behaviors. The setting offers panoramic views of the Inn Valley, making the visit as much about the landscape as the animals.
