Changdeokgung

历史一瞥
Changdeokgung was established in 1405 as a secondary palace to Gyeongbokgung. After the Imjin War destroyed all palaces in 1592, Changdeokgung was rebuilt and effectively became Joseon's main palace for several centuries. In 1907, the final Korean monarch Sunjong made it his official palace. The Korean royal family continued to reside there even after the 1945 liberation of Korea and into the late 20th century.

Why was Changdeokgung built instead of using Gyeongbokgung?
King Taejong ordered its construction in 1404, possibly to avoid Gyeongbokgung due to unpleasant memories and inauspicious feng shui, and to have a palace freer from political influences.
Was Changdeokgung destroyed in war?
Yes, it was completely burned down during the Imjin War in 1592, and again almost entirely burned in the 1623 Injo coup. It was rebuilt each time.
What does 'Changdeokgung' mean?
It means 'Palace of Prospering Virtue', a name given in 1404 after the first phase of construction.
