Checkpoint Charlie

East German leader Walter Ulbricht secured Soviet permission to build the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop mass emigration. The checkpoint became the only designated crossing for foreign tourists, dignitaries, and Allied military personnel. In October 1961, US and Soviet tanks faced off here during the Berlin Crisis. President John F. Kennedy visited on 26 June 1963, the same day he gave his 'Ich bin ein Berliner' speech. The original American guard house was removed in 1990 and is now at the Allied Museum in Dahlem.
