Plaza Baquedano (Plaza Italia)

Plaza Baquedano, commonly called Plaza Italia, is a bustling roundabout and square in Santiago where several major avenues converge. It serves as a symbolic heart of the city, often hosting political demonstrations, football victory celebrations, and New Year's festivities. The plaza features a central monument to General Manuel Baquedano, a hero of the War of the Pacific, though the statue has been temporarily removed for restoration. Surrounding the square are grand buildings, including the Iglesia de la Gratitud Nacional and the Torre Entel tower. Visitors will experience a vibrant, sometimes chaotic atmosphere with constant traffic, street vendors, and crowds. The nearby Bellavista neighborhood offers bohemian cafes and nightlife, while the Mapocho River runs alongside.

历史一瞥

Originally a crossing point on the Mapocho River, the plaza was named after General Baquedano in the early 20th century. It became a focal point for public gatherings, notably during the 2019 protests when it was a central site for demonstrations.
