Museum of Memory and Human Rights

The Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile, commemorates victims of human rights violations during the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet from 1973 to 1990. It houses torture devices, letters from prisoners, newspaper clippings, and survivor testimony. The entrance features the last poem of Chilean folksinger Víctor Jara, written shortly before his death in 1973.

历史一瞥

President Michelle Bachelet announced the museum in a 2007 speech, and a public competition selected a design by Brazilian architects. Bachelet, herself a torture victim under Pinochet, laid the first stone in December 2008. The museum opened on January 11, 2010, as part of Chile's bicentennial commemoration.
