The park was inaugurated on 21 August 1954 for the 400th anniversary of the city of São Paulo. It was designed by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, with buildings by architect João Felipe Pereira and landscape by agronomist Otávio Augusto Teixeira Mendes. In the 1990s, its green areas were heritage-listed by the city and state to prevent further construction. In 2016, the complex of buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer and others was registered as a national landmark.
