The temple on the island was built in 1881 by Hồ Quang Minh. In 1939, a French officer named Archinard tried to destroy it with gunfire but caused little damage; he later died at the site, leading the French to call the island Ile Archinard, though locals kept the name Hòn Bà. The temple was renovated in 1971 with community contributions.
