The pearls deserve the explanation, because they are the reason to pick this cave over its neighbours. A cave pearl forms when water drips into a shallow pool and keeps a grain of sand in constant slight motion, coating it in layer after layer of calcite over centuries until a smooth, round stone sits loose in the water. The ones here range from mung bean size up to table tennis ball size, and there are thousands of them. They only survive where nobody walks, because a single boot crushes centuries of formation, which is why pearls are rare in caves that have been open for years and abundant in one that was surveyed last month. From Dong Hoi, a taxi reaches Phong Nha in 45 to 90 minutes, or the local bus does it in about 90 minutes for around 35,000 VND.
