Hollyhock House

Hollyhock House is a landmark of modern architecture, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Located in East Hollywood's Barnsdall Art Park, the house is Wright's first major commission in Los Angeles and a precursor to his later textile-block structures. The building's name comes from Barnsdall's favorite flower, the hollyhock, which appears in stylized concrete ornamentation throughout. Visitors can explore the main residence, which features a central courtyard, a reflecting pool, and a living room that opens to the outdoors, a radical concept for the 1920s. The site also includes a gallery space and offers panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills. A bit of history

Commissioned in 1919 by Aline Barnsdall, a wealthy oil heiress and theater patron, Hollyhock House was completed in 1923. It was Wright's first Los Angeles project and helped define the California modern style. The house later served as an art center and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007.
