Wat Chedi Luang is a prominent temple in the heart of Chiang Mai's Old City, dating back to the 14th century. Its main attraction is the enormous, partially collapsed chedi (stupa), which was once the tallest structure in the city and originally housed the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok). The chedi was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century and remains in its ruined state, giving it a dramatic, ancient feel. The temple grounds also include a modern viharn (assembly hall), a city pillar (Sao Inthakin), and a revered Buddha statue. Visitors can explore the site, learn about Lanna architecture, and observe monks in daily life.
