Fotografiska Stockholm

Fotografiska is one of the world's leading museums of photography, a large, dynamic private gallery in a converted Art Nouveau customs house on Stockholm's waterfront. It has no permanent collection; instead it runs a rotating programme of major contemporary photography exhibitions, from world-famous names to provocative newcomers, which keeps it fresh for repeat visits. The shows are ambitious and beautifully staged across several floors.

The top-floor café-restaurant is a destination in itself, with one of the best views over Stockholm's harbour and the old town across the water, many come as much for the panorama and the acclaimed sustainable food as for the photography. Open late most nights, it's a great evening option, and the model has been successful enough to spawn outposts in other cities.

A bit of history

Fotografiska opened in 2010 in a 1906 former customs house on the Stadsgården waterfront. Conceived as a privately run museum dedicated entirely to photography with a rotating exhibition model, it became a major success and has since expanded to other international cities.
