Catedral Tarragona

Tarragona Cathedral is the magnificent crown of the historic Catalan city of Tarragona, a vast, beautiful cathedral built on the highest point of the old town, on a site layered with history: a Roman temple to Augustus once stood here, later a mosque, and finally this Christian cathedral. Begun in the 12th century, it blends Romanesque and Gothic styles, with a richly carved main portal, a soaring nave, a serene cloister with intricate capitals and a garden, and a fine main altarpiece. The cathedral museum (Museu Diocesà) displays religious art and Tarragona's deep history.

It's the centrepiece of Tarragona's atmospheric medieval quarter, itself wrapped within a UNESCO-listed ensemble of Roman ruins (Tarragona was the important Roman city of Tarraco). Climb through the narrow old-town streets to reach it, explore the cloister, and combine your visit with the city's remarkable Roman amphitheatre, circus, and walls.
