CosmoCaixa is Barcelona's superb science museum, a large, modern, interactive institution acclaimed across Europe. Its showpiece is the Flooded Forest (Bosc Inundat), a recreated patch of Amazon rainforest under glass, complete with real tropical plants, fish, amphibians, and a simulated rainstorm, you walk through it at multiple levels, even seeing the waterline from below. Other highlights include the Geological Wall (cross-sections of real rock strata), a planetarium, and extensive hands-on exhibits on physics, evolution, and the cosmos.

It's a brilliant family destination and a refreshing change from Barcelona's art and Gaudí trail, set in a handsome converted Modernista building in the upper part of the city. The Flooded Forest alone is worth the trip, and the spiral ramp descending through a giant exhibition tree is a memorable architectural touch.

A bit of history

The museum traces back to a science museum founded in 1981, transformed and hugely expanded into CosmoCaixa in 2004 by the 'la Caixa' foundation, within a restored early-20th-century Modernista building. It has won European museum awards for its interactive approach.
