Lake Bled is the postcard image of Slovenia, an emerald-green glacial lake with a tiny island at its centre crowned by a baroque church, and a medieval castle perched on a cliff above. It's almost impossibly pretty, ringed by the Julian Alps. The classic experience is to be rowed out to Bled Island in a traditional flat-bottomed pletna boat, climb the 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption, and ring its wishing bell.

Around the shore, a flat 6-km path makes for an easy walk or cycle with constantly changing views, and the cliff-top Bled Castle gives the definitive panorama over lake, island, and mountains. Don't leave without trying kremšnita, the local cream cake born in Bled's lakeside cafés.

A bit of history

Bled has been a settlement since prehistoric times; its castle, perched on a cliff above the lake, is among Slovenia's oldest, first mentioned in 1011. The island church became a pilgrimage site, and from the 19th century Bled developed into a fashionable alpine spa resort, a status it retains.

Common questions

How do I get to the island?

By boat, either a traditional pletna (rowed by a local boatman) or a self-rowed rental. From the jetty, 99 steps lead up to the church.

Is the castle worth it?

Yes, Bled Castle on the clifftop gives the definitive panorama over the lake, island, and Alps, plus a small museum. There's an entry fee and an uphill approach.

When should I visit?

Late spring to early autumn for boating and walking; early morning for mist and mirror-calm reflections. Summer is beautiful but busy.

What's the local specialty?

Kremšnita, a vanilla-and-cream custard slice that originated in Bled and is served at lakeside cafés.
