Tianshuijing Catholic Church

Tianshuijing Catholic Church, also known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a historic Roman Catholic church located on Wuxing Street in Xi'an's bustling Muslim Quarter. Built in the early 20th century, the church features a striking Gothic facade with twin spires, rose windows, and intricate stone carvings, yet incorporates traditional Chinese motifs such as dragon-shaped gargoyles and lotus decorations. The interior is equally impressive, with high vaulted ceilings, stained glass depicting biblical scenes, and a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the lively street outside. The church remains an active place of worship, with daily masses in Chinese and occasional services in English. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, which include a small courtyard and a statue of the Virgin Mary. The surrounding area is filled with food stalls and shops selling Islamic souvenirs, making it a unique cultural stop in Xi'an.

Немного истории

The church was built in 1909 by Italian missionaries of the Franciscan order. It served as the cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Xi'an and survived the Cultural Revolution partly due to local protection.
