Sighisoara Clock Tower

The Sighisoara Clock Tower is the centerpiece of the UNESCO-listed historic center of Sighisoara, Romania. Built in the 14th century, this 64-meter-tall tower dominates the skyline with its distinctive baroque roof and ornate clock face. Visitors can climb the 175 wooden steps to the top, where they are rewarded with sweeping views of the citadel's colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and the surrounding Transylvanian countryside. Inside, the tower houses the History Museum, which displays artifacts from Sighisoara's past, including medieval weapons, guild banners, and a torture chamber. The clock itself is a marvel: every hour, seven small wooden figurines (representing different trades and virtues) emerge from a niche above the clock face. The tower is also the main entrance to the citadel, with a tunnel that leads to the lower town. A visit here is essential for understanding Sighisoara's role as a fortified Saxon town and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula).
