Óbidos is one of Portugal's most picture-perfect medieval towns, a tiny, whitewashed village entirely enclosed within intact 12th-century walls, crowned by a hilltop castle that's now a historic pousada (inn). Óbidos has roots going back to Roman and Moorish times; reconquered in 1148, its castle and walls were rebuilt and strengthened over the medieval period.
