Santa Lucíaheuvel is een compact stadspark dat steil oprijst in het hart van Santiago. Bezoekers beklimmen stenen trappen langs fonteinen, tuinen en de overblijfselen van een Spaans fort uit de 19e eeuw. Op de top biedt een uitkijkpunt een weids uitzicht op de Andes en de skyline van de stad. De heuvel heeft ook een klein kasteelachtig bouwwerk en een kapel, wat het een rustige ontsnapping maakt met een mix van natuur en geschiedenis.

Een stukje geschiedenis
Known as Huelén by indigenous people, it was renamed Santa Lucía after Pedro de Valdivia conquered it on December 13, 1540. In 1816, two forts were built on the hill, and in 1820 Fort Hidalgo was completed. The hillside was used as a cemetery for non-Catholics until remains were moved to the General Cemetery. In 1849, an astronomical observatory was set up here, later sold to Chile to form the first National Astronomical Observatory. Major remodeling in 1872 added a road, a chapel, gas lighting, and the yellow-and-white facade. A cannon shot is fired at noon.
