역사 이야기
Originally known as 'Thung Phra Men' (the royal cremation ground), it was used for cremations of kings, queens, and high-ranking princes from King Rama I's reign. King Rama IV renamed it 'Thong Sanam Luang' in 1855. During King Rama III's reign, it was a rice field that became waterlogged in the rainy season, providing frogs, crabs, and ricefield rats for locals. King Rama V enlarged the field, removed old ceremonial buildings, and planted two rows of tamarind trees after being inspired by Javanese gardens; two more rows were added around 1967, totaling 783 trees. It also served as a weekend market venue until 1982, when the market moved to Chatuchak.
