Sainte-Chapelle

생트샤펠은 시테섬에 숨겨진 보석 같은 곳으로, 귀중한 성유물을 보관하기 위해 루이 IX가 지었습니다. 예배당은 한때 궁전 시종들이 사용했던 아래층 예배당과 왕실 전용이었던 위층 예배당, 두 층으로 이루어져 있습니다. 위층 예배당은 숨이 멎을 만큼 아름답습니다. 높이 솟은 15개의 스테인드글라스 창에는 1,100개가 넘는 성경 장면이 선명한 파란색, 빨간색, 금색으로 묘사되어 있습니다. 유리를 통과해 들어오는 햇빛은 돌바닥 위에 만화경처럼 다채로운 빛을 만들어 냅니다. 가느다란 기둥과 채색된 아치형 천장은 신비로운 분위기를 더합니다. 비교적 작은 규모임에도 수직으로 뻗은 선과 빛나는 창 덕분에 예배당은 매우 웅장하게 느껴집니다. 예술 애호가와 역사 애호가라면 꼭 봐야 할 곳이며, 바깥의 번잡한 도시와 대조되는 고요함을 느낄 수 있습니다.

역사 이야기

Construction began after 1238, and the chapel was consecrated on 26 April 1248. Louis IX had bought the relics from Baldwin II, the Latin emperor at Constantinople; they reached Paris in 1239, and Louis carried them barefoot and dressed as a penitent during the final stage of their journey. During the French Revolution the chapel became a grain storehouse, exterior sculpture and royal emblems were smashed, and its spire was removed. A major restoration begun in 1840 continued for twenty-eight years.
