Sultanahmet Square

Sultanahmet Square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, is the heart of Istanbul's historic peninsula. This large open space was once a chariot-racing stadium during the Byzantine era, and today it's a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The square is flanked by some of the city's most famous monuments: the Blue Mosque to the east, Hagia Sophia to the south, and the Basilica Cistern nearby. In the center stand ancient obelisks, including the Egyptian Obelisk and the Serpent Column, remnants of the Hippodrome. The square is paved and lined with trees, offering benches and fountains. It's a prime spot for photography, especially at sunset when the mosques are lit. Street vendors sell snacks like roasted chestnuts and simit. Sultanahmet Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit for anyone exploring Istanbul's rich history.

Getting there

방문 전 알아두기

• The square can be very crowded during peak tourist season (April-October). Visit early or late.
• Wear comfortable shoes as you'll likely walk a lot between attractions.
• Photography is allowed, but avoid using flash inside mosques. Drones are prohibited.
• Bring water, especially in summer, as it can get hot. There are public fountains.

역사 이야기

Originally built as a Roman hippodrome in AD 203, expanded by Constantine the Great. It held chariot races and public events until the 13th century. The square's name comes from the nearby Sultanahmet Mosque, built in the 17th century.
