Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, originally built as a Christian cathedral in the 6th century, is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture that has served as a mosque, museum, and again a mosque. Its massive central dome, seemingly floating on light, revolutionized architecture and remains one of the largest in the world. Inside, visitors are awed by the vast nave, marble pillars, and the interplay of Christian mosaics and Islamic calligraphy. The upper gallery offers close-up views of the mosaics, including the Deësis mosaic depicting Christ, Mary, and John the Baptist. Since its conversion back to a mosque in 2020, the building remains open to all visitors, with designated prayer times and areas. The exterior, with its four minarets and domed silhouette, dominates the Istanbul skyline. Located in Sultanahmet Square, it stands opposite the Blue Mosque, creating a breathtaking historical panorama.
