The temple was built on the site of an ancient outdoor sanctuary to Zeus. An earlier temple was constructed by the tyrant Peisistratus around 550 BC, then demolished. Around 520 BC, his sons Hippias and Hipparchos began a colossal new temple to surpass the Heraion of Samos and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. Work stopped when the tyranny was overthrown in 510 BC, leaving only the platform and some column elements. The project was revived in 174 BC by Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who changed the design to Corinthian order and used Pentelic marble, but halted again at his death in 164 BC. The temple was sacked by Roman general Sulla in 86 BC, who took incomplete columns to Rome. Hadrian finally completed it around 124–125 AD, dedicating it in 132 AD. The temple was pillaged during a Germanic invasion in 267 AD and likely never repaired; an earthquake in the 5th century destroyed it. Over centuries, its marble was quarried for building materials. By 1436, only 21 columns remained standing.
