Master Xuanzang (602–664 CE) was a Chinese Buddhist monk who traveled overland to India during the Tang Dynasty, returning with Buddhist scriptures. He later translated them at the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. The bronze statue was erected in the early 2000s as part of the square's beautification project.
