The Dome of the Rock, completed in 691 CE, is one of the oldest Islamic structures in the world and a masterpiece of Byzantine and Islamic architecture. Its golden dome and octagonal base dominate Jerusalem's skyline. Inside, the shrine encloses the Foundation Stone, where Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Night Journey. Non-Muslims cannot enter the shrine itself but can view the exterior and the surrounding Temple Mount plaza, which also houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The site is managed by the Islamic Waqf and has strict dress and access rules.
