The Shehy Mountains stretch across the border of County Cork and County Kerry, near Kenmare. This range is less frequented than the nearby MacGillycuddy's Reeks, offering a more solitary hiking experience. The highest peak is Knockboy at 706 meters, but the range is characterized by rolling, heather-covered hills rather than sharp peaks. Hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Bantry Bay, the Beara Peninsula, and the distant Atlantic. The terrain is open and boggy, with trails that follow old drove roads and mountain passes. Wildlife includes mountain hares, peregrine falcons, and occasionally feral goats. The Shehy Mountains are ideal for experienced hillwalkers seeking a remote adventure.
