Clare Abbey, founded in 1189 for Augustinian canons, is a tranquil ruin situated on the banks of the River Fergus, about 2 km from Ennis town center. The abbey was one of the most important religious houses in medieval County Clare. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the church, cloister, and domestic buildings, all set in a serene rural landscape. The site is less visited than Quin Abbey, offering a more solitary experience. The stone walls and arches, though roofless, convey a sense of ancient devotion.
