Municipal Laundry

Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, often called the Municipal Laundry, is Asia's largest outdoor laundry. Nestled between skyscrapers and railway tracks in South Mumbai, this sprawling complex consists of hundreds of open-air concrete washing pens. Here, thousands of dhobis (washermen) beat, scrub, and rinse laundry from hotels, hospitals, and homes across the city. The rhythmic thwack of clothes against stone, the steam rising from vats of boiling water, and the rainbow of drying garments create an unforgettable sensory experience. Visitors can observe from a pedestrian bridge or a designated viewing platform; the laundry itself is a working facility, so access inside is restricted. A bit of history
