The Brandenburg Gate is a monumental neoclassical triumphal arch that stands at the heart of Berlin. Constructed in the late 18th century, it was originally a city gate marking the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg. The gate is crowned by the Quadriga, a statue of a chariot drawn by four horses driven by Victoria, the goddess of victory. Over the centuries, the gate has witnessed many pivotal moments in German history, from Napoleon's procession through it to its role as a symbol of division during the Cold War and later reunification. Today, it is a must-see landmark, especially stunning when illuminated at night. Visitors can walk through the gate, admire its detailed sandstone reliefs, and reflect on its historical significance. The surrounding Pariser Platz is a lively square with cafes and embassies, offering a perfect spot to take in the grandeur of the gate.

Don't miss

  • Walk through the gate and admire the Quadriga statue on top.
  • Visit at night when the gate is beautifully illuminated.
  • Explore Pariser Platz, the square in front of the gate.
  • See the Room of Silence (Raum der Stille) inside the gate for quiet reflection.
  • Look for the cobblestone line marking the former path of the Berlin Wall nearby.
