Cryptoportique de Reims

The Cryptoportique de Reims is a remarkable remnant of the Roman city of Durocortorum, once the capital of the Gallic Remi tribe. This semi-subterranean gallery, dating from the 3rd century AD, formed part of the grand forum complex, the civic and commercial heart of the city. Today, it lies beneath the modern Place du Forum, accessible via a discreet entrance. Visitors descend stone steps into a long, vaulted corridor lined with massive limestone blocks. The space is cool and dimly lit, evoking the atmosphere of ancient Roman engineering. Unlike the more famous cellars of Champagne houses, this cryptoportique was not for wine storage but likely served as a covered market or public walkway. Its survival is extraordinary: it was rediscovered in the 19th century during urban renovations and later restored. What makes the visit distinctive is the sense of walking through layers of history, above ground, medieval and modern Reims bustles; below, the Roman grid remains intact. The site is small but evocative, with informative panels explaining its construction and purpose.
