The Arc de Triomphe stands proudly at the center of Place de l'Étoile, a massive traffic circle where twelve grand avenues converge. Commissioned by Napoleon after his victory at Austerlitz, the arch commemorates those who fought and died for France. Its intricate reliefs depict scenes from the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, while the names of generals and battles are inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame that is rekindled daily. Visitors can climb the 284 steps to the terrace for one of the best panoramic views of Paris, with the Champs-Élysées stretching east to the Louvre and west to La Défense. The arch is especially stunning at sunset or when illuminated at night.
