Perched atop Fourvière hill, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a striking landmark visible from across Lyon. Built in the late 19th century, its Neo-Byzantine architecture features intricate mosaics, marble columns, and a grand interior that blends Romanesque and Byzantine styles. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is said to have saved Lyon from plague and war. Visitors can explore the main sanctuary, the crypt, and the adjacent chapel. The real draw, however, is the panoramic view from the esplanade: on a clear day, you can see the entire city, the Saône and Rhône rivers, and the Alps in the distance. The basilica is also a pilgrimage site, especially during the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
