Congregation Emanu-El (Victoria, British Columbia)

Congregation Emanu-El is the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada, consecrated in 1863. Its Romanesque Revival architecture features a striking facade with arched windows and a rose window. Inside, the sanctuary retains its original wooden pews, a carved Torah ark, and a women's gallery. The synagogue reflects the early Jewish community in Victoria, many of whom were merchants during the Gold Rush era. Today, it remains an active congregation and a National Historic Site, offering guided tours that share stories of Jewish life in 19th-century British Columbia.
