The Basilica and Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is one of Recife's most important Baroque monuments, built by the Carmelite order in the late 1600s. The church facade is ornate, with a central niche holding a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Inside, the main altar is covered in gold leaf, and the side chapels display beautiful azulejo (blue-and-white tile) panels depicting biblical scenes. The convent, adjacent to the church, features a peaceful cloister with a garden. Visitors can also see the sacristy with its carved wood furniture and religious art.
