Praça dos Três Poderes

Praça dos Três Poderes, or Three Powers Plaza, is Brasília's civic plaza, bringing together the Executive at Palácio do Planalto, the Legislative at the National Congress, and the Judiciary at the Supreme Federal Court. Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed the setting as part of the new capital's Pilot Plan.

A bit of history

The idea of moving Brazil's capital inland dates to the 19th century, proposed by José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva to protect it from coastal attacks. The plaza was first named in Lúcio Costa's winning proposal for the Pilot Plan of the new capital.
