St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney

St Andrew's Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney and the oldest cathedral in Australia, consecrated in 1868. It stands on George Street in the Sydney central business district and is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture, designed primarily by Edmund Blacket. The cathedral features a notable pipe organ, a choir of men and boys, and a company of bell ringers.

A bit of history

A cathedral was first planned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1819, but only foundations were laid. Bishop William Grant Broughton laid a new foundation stone in 1837, but work ceased in 1842. Edmund Blacket took over in 1842, enlarging the design and adding a central tower. The cathedral was consecrated on St Andrew's Day, 30 November 1868. In 1941, the interior was reoriented due to changing population patterns.
