Son Tra Mountain

Son Tra Mountain, also called Monkey Mountain, is a mountain and peninsula range on Da Nang's Son Tra Peninsula, overlooking the Bay of Da Nang and the East Sea. Tiên Sa Beach and Da Nang Port's Tiên Sa Terminal sit at the base of its western face. The mountain was designated a nationally protected forest in 1977 and is noted as habitat for endangered species, especially the red-shanked douc langur; more than 60% of that species occurs on the mountain range.

A bit of history

The mountain was the location of the Monkey Mountain Facility, a United States military communications facility during the Vietnam War. Its position near Da Nang Air Base and Marble Mountain Air Facility also made it the site of several wartime aircraft crashes. A 1968 F-8 Crusader crash left part of the aircraft's rear fuselage embedded in the mountain. On Yet Kieu Road, Y Pha Nho Cemetery preserves the graves of French and Spanish soldiers who died during the Franco-Spanish expedition of 1858–1860; the cemetery was inaugurated in 1898.
