The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is the city's principal Catholic place of worship. Located in the historic Ciudad Vieja district, its construction began in 1790 and was completed in 1804. The neoclassical design, with a central dome and symmetrical towers, stands out against the colonial surroundings.
