The Montevideo Cabildo, originally the seat of colonial government, now houses the Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum). Constructed between 1804 and 1811, this neoclassical building overlooks the Plaza Constitución. The museum offers a journey through Montevideo's past, with exhibits on indigenous cultures, the colonial period, independence, and urban development. Visitors can explore restored rooms, including the old council chamber and jail cells. Temporary exhibitions often focus on local art and history. The building itself is a prime example of colonial architecture.
