This is by far the best food experience I ever had. Each dish is prepared with the best ingredients. Naturally selected. Combination of amazing flavors. The variety of Mexican drinks they have is incredible. The staff is wonderful. Definitely my new place to visit in DC. Highly recommend to take metro. Parking is complicated as any place in DC.
When a restaurant is top rated as “best Mexican in all of “DC” it sets a high bar. It’s definitely not Tex-Mex, so you won’t see any of that. $29 for chips and Salsas with Guacamole (see photo) seems a bit pricey, and the Guacamole had so much Lime juice in it, there were no other flavors…a mistake in the kitchen, perhaps? I don’t drink, asked for a regular iced tea and they don’t have any. So, I had water. The Shrimp Cocktail is extraordinary. Don’t get 6, order the 12. You will eat them all. The steak Tacos are great with tender beef and fresh tortillas. They’re good. I’m not used to gourmet Mexican, so I didn’t want to eat the grasshoppers/crickets on the special of the day, I would happier with an Enchilada. This is the first DC restaurant I’ve been to in a long time that didn’t have those annoying surcharges on the bill, or a mandatory tip fee. That was refreshing. I think if you are nearby, it’s worth a try. We live 40 miles away so for us it’s a destination eatery and didn’t wow us enough to return. Maybe if they had iced tea?
My wife and I had dinner here. The food was very interesting - this is not your usual Mexican restaurant as it has a different twist to your normal dishes plus some new dishes (to me anyway). We did go through the menu with the waitress to ensure we got our order right as the menu has a confusing lay-out. We should have asked about spiciness of the food as my pork dish did bring tears to my eyes! The plantain side was very good. Service was good. Not cheap - $180 inc tax/tip for two.
Wonderfully attentive and efficient service combined with a deep menu and great recommendations meant that we really enjoyed our meal at Amparo. I can’t wait to go back and explore the menu again!
