Capitol Butte, also known as Thunder Mountain, is a prominent red rock formation on Sedona's western skyline. Hikers tackle steep, rocky trails like the Capitol Butte Trail to reach the summit, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Verde Valley, Oak Creek Canyon, and surrounding red rock formations. The climb is strenuous but offers a true sense of adventure and solitude. Visitors should come prepared with sturdy footwear and plenty of water, as the trail offers little shade.
