Bonaventure Cemetery is a Victorian-era burial ground set along the Wilmington River, known for its atmospheric beauty. Visitors wander among live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, elaborate marble statues, and family mausoleums. The cemetery gained fame as a setting in John Berendt's book and the subsequent film. Notable graves include that of songwriter Johnny Mercer and the haunting 'Bird Girl' statue (now relocated to the Telfair Museum). It remains an active cemetery and a serene place for reflection.
