The Morgan Library & Museum is one of New York's most refined cultural gems, originally the private library of financier J. Pierpont Morgan, now a museum of rare books, manuscripts, drawings, and music scores in midtown Manhattan. The jewel is Mr. Morgan's original library (the East Room), a breathtaking three-tiered hall of inlaid bookcases, a painted ceiling, and a vast fireplace, alongside his opulent study. The collection is extraordinary: Gutenberg Bibles, illuminated medieval manuscripts, handwritten scores by Mozart and Beethoven, literary manuscripts, and Old Master drawings, shown in rotating exhibitions.
A modern Renzo Piano-designed glass atrium links the historic buildings, adding light-filled galleries and a lovely café. It's a calm, civilised antidote to the city's bigger, busier museums, beloved by book and history lovers, and a quiet highlight of Manhattan.
