Devils Postpile National Monument protects a striking formation of columnar basalt, created by cooling lava flows around 100,000 years ago. The symmetrical columns rise up to 60 feet, resembling a giant's organ pipes. A short, easy trail leads to the base and the top of the formation, where visitors can walk on the polished surface and see glacial striations. The monument also offers access to the Pacific Crest Trail and is a peaceful spot for photography and geology enthusiasts.
Don't miss
- Walk among the 60-foot-tall basalt columns and see their hexagonal shapes.
- Hike to the top of the formation to view glacial scratches on the rock.
- Combine your visit with a hike to nearby Rainbow Falls via the same trail.
