Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is a pristine sanctuary spanning over 4,000 acres of salt marshes, maritime forests, and freshwater ponds. A network of flat, well-maintained trails, including the popular 1.5-mile White Trail, allows visitors to explore by foot or bicycle. The refuge is a haven for birdwatchers, with sightings of herons, egrets, and painted buntings common. Deer, alligators, and sea turtles also inhabit the area. With no development beyond a few informational kiosks, the refuge offers a serene escape into nature just minutes from Hilton Head's bustle.

Don't miss

  • Spot wading birds like great blue herons and roseate spoonbills along the salt marsh boardwalk
  • Bike the 7-mile round-trip route to the island's southern tip for panoramic marsh views
  • Search for alligators basking on the banks of the freshwater ponds near the trailhead
