Whetstone Mountain is a striking peak rising to over 12,000 feet in the Elk Mountains, just south of Crested Butte. It offers several hiking trails, including the popular Whetstone Vista Trail, which provides sweeping views of the surrounding alpine landscape, including the Maroon Bells and Gothic Mountain. The hike is moderately strenuous, traversing wildflower-filled meadows and rocky terrain. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of rugged peaks and verdant valleys. The mountain is also a favorite for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Its proximity to town makes it a convenient yet rewarding outdoor adventure.
